Prerequisites are absolute. Everything after that is a choice.
Engineering is the least forgiving stream on paper — a missing Calculus and Vectors or Physics credit ends the application before anyone reads it. What's left to decide is harder than it looks: which discipline, how early to commit to one, and whether co-op is worth the extra year.

The Admission Information Form
Waterloo reads the AIF and it moves decisions. It is the one part of an engineering application a student fully controls in Grade 12, and it is routinely the part left until the week it's due.
Committing to a discipline — or not
Waterloo admits to a specific program on day one. Queen's and McMaster run a general first year and let students choose after. For a student genuinely torn between mechanical and electrical, that structural difference matters more than any ranking does.
Co-op is a real trade, not a free upgrade
A co-op stream runs longer than the standard degree and the work terms are competitive in their own right. It's the right call for many students and the wrong one for some — worth deciding deliberately rather than by default.
